DB33 Low Viscosity PU Track Binder Formulations
Why does a runway binder batch become unworkable before the granules are fully wetted? Viscosity and workability decide how long a two-component binder stays usable. DB33 is designed for polyurethane processing systems: in runway adhesives, elastomers and flexible foams it reduces system viscosity, improves levelling and workability and shows good migration resistance. Compatibility with your PU prepolymer should be evaluated in a small-scale trial before scaling up.
Why viscosity matters in binder systems
A runway binder is applied as a liquid that has to wet and coat every granule evenly and then level itself before it cures. If the viscosity rises too early, the coating is uneven, weak points form and the surface finish varies from one batch to the next. A viscosity-reducing component that stays in the cured matrix gives two benefits at once: longer usable working time while the binder is liquid, and a softer, more forgiving elastomer once it has cured.
| Process stage | What the plasticizer changes | Practical benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Mixing | Lower system viscosity | Faster and more even granule wetting |
| Application | Better levelling | Consistent surface and thickness |
| Working time | Slower viscosity build | More usable time for large areas |
| Cure | Remains in the matrix | Flexible, durable elastomer |
| Service | Good migration resistance | Stable properties over time |
Compatibility with PU prepolymers
A plasticizer used in a polyurethane system has to be checked against the prepolymer, the polyol and any catalyst package. Compatibility is not only about solubility: water content, residual alcohol groups and acidity can all influence the reaction. That is why the working sequence is a small-scale trial, an assessment of pot life and cured properties, and only then scale-up.
| Compatibility question | What to verify | Consequence if missed |
|---|---|---|
| With the prepolymer and polyol | Homogeneous blend, no separation | Uneven cure and soft spots |
| Water content | Low and stable | Foaming and erratic viscosity |
| Reactivity | No interference with pot life | Unusable working time |
| With granules and fillers | No interference with adhesion | Granule pull-out in service |
| After cure | No exudation or bloom | Sticky surface, migration in use |
Process and safety notes
Polyurethane systems involve isocyanates, so the handling rules of the supplier safety data apply throughout: ventilation, protective equipment, and controlled moisture. Plasticizer should be stored and metered so that it does not pick up moisture, and mixing sequence should be fixed so that batches are reproducible. Temperatures during application should stay inside the window recommended for the system, because both viscosity and reaction rate are temperature dependent.
Frequently asked questions
Will DB33 change the hardness of the cured binder? Any plasticizing component influences the cured elastomer. The direction is usually softer and more flexible, and the level should be set with hardness and rebound measurements on cured samples.
Is migration resistance important for a runway binder? Yes. A binder in outdoor service is exposed to heat, sun and rain, and a plasticizer that migrates will leave the surface sticky and reduce long-term performance.
What is the first step? A small-scale trial with your prepolymer and polyol, checking compatibility, pot life and cured properties.
