TOTM High Temperature Automotive Cable Insulation Guide (105°C Rating)

Engineering guide to TOTM (CAS 3319-31-1) in 105°C and 125°C PVC wire insulation: thermal ageing mechanism, trimellitate formulation guidance, oil resistance and low volatility for automotive harnesses.
High-Heat PVC Compound Engineering: TOTM for 105°C Automotive Wire
Why is TOTM used in 105°C and higher PVC cable compounds? TOTM (CAS 3319-31-1) is a trifunctional trimellitate with a molecular weight of about 546.8 g/mol and a bulky aromatic structure that markedly reduces plasticizer volatility and migration. In heat-ageing tests of the type used for 105°C and higher insulation classes, trimellitate-plasticized PVC retains elongation significantly better than conventional phthalate systems.
The engineering problem: heat ageing drives plasticizer loss
When a flexible PVC cable compound is aged at elevated temperature, the plasticizer is the component most likely to leave the compound. Volatilisation and migration reduce elongation, harden the insulation and eventually cause cracking. This is why insulation classes above the general-purpose range cannot be met with a conventional plasticizer regardless of how the stabiliser package is adjusted.
TOTM addresses this at the molecular level. It is a trioctyl trimellitate: three ester chains on one aromatic core, with a molecular weight of roughly 546.8 g/mol. The bulky structure and the higher molecular weight make it far harder for the molecule to diffuse out of the PVC matrix or to evaporate at process and service temperatures.
Trimellitate versus conventional plasticizers in cable compounds
| Evaluation area | Conventional phthalate plasticizer | TOTM direction | Cable engineering impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Molecular structure | Branched phthalate, two ester chains | Trifunctional trimellitate, three ester chains | Higher steric bulk, lower diffusion |
| Molecular weight | Around 390 to 420 g/mol | Around 546.8 g/mol | Reduced volatility and migration |
| Heat ageing | Reference | Significantly better elongation retention in heat ageing | Supports 105°C and higher insulation classes |
| Volatility at process temperature | Reference | Low volatility direction | Less fume in extrusion, cleaner die area |
| Oil and fuel resistance | Reference | Improved resistance direction | Relevant for harnesses in engine and underbody areas |
| Cold flexibility | Better | Weaker than adipate or sebacate esters | Cold-flex requirements need a second plasticizer |
| Cost per tonne | Lower | Higher | Justified by the insulation class requirement |
Values are directional and describe the grade family rather than one delivery. The insulation class and the ageing requirement of the finished cable must be confirmed by the applicable cable standard and the batch test report.
Formulation guidance for 105°C and 125°C insulation
- Set the insulation class first. Confirm whether the target is a 105°C class or a higher class, then confirm the heat-ageing test conditions that the cable standard requires.
- Use TOTM as the primary plasticizer. Trimellitates are normally the main plasticizer in high-temperature compounds, not a partial replacement.
- Balance the stabiliser package. Combine the stabiliser system with a secondary co-additive such as ESBO where the compounder's own ageing data supports it.
- Watch the lubrication balance. TOTM has a different plasticizing response from conventional plasticizers, so lubrication and fusion behaviour should be re-checked on the extrusion line.
- Solve cold flexibility separately. If the cable also has a low-temperature requirement, add an adipate or sebacate ester rather than increasing the trimellitate loading.
- Verify ageing on the finished cable. Heat ageing, elongation retention and, where applicable, oil resistance should be verified on insulation taken from the finished cable, not only on pressed plaques.
Where TOTM compounds are used
- Automotive wiring harnesses in high-temperature zones, including engine-adjacent routing.
- Appliance lead wire and internal wiring where the insulation class is above general purpose.
- Industrial control and power cable that must survive sustained conductor heating.
- Cable that combines heat exposure with contact with oils, fuels or lubricants.
Frequently asked questions
Can TOTM be used at 105°C continuously?
Trimellitate-plasticized compounds are used for insulation classes around 105°C and above, subject to the ageing requirement of the applicable cable standard. The qualification is always made on the finished cable, and the test conditions depend on the standard being applied.
Is TOTM a drop-in replacement for DINP or DOTP in cable compounds?
No. TOTM is normally used as the primary plasticizer in a high-temperature formulation rather than substituted one-for-one into a general-purpose compound. Lubrication, fusion and cold-flexibility behaviour should all be re-validated.
Does TOTM help with oil resistance?
Trimellitate compounds are directionally better than conventional phthalate systems in oil resistance, which is one reason they are used in automotive and industrial cable. The required level must be confirmed by the applicable oil-resistance test on the finished cable.
