Adoption Trends of Non-Phthalate Plasticizers in Flexible PVC Formulations
As export markets continue to raise environmental requirements, more downstream companies are evaluating non-phthalate alternatives in flexible PVC formulations. This article outlines key evaluation points such as compatibility, migration and processing temperature adaptability.
Introducing a non-phthalate plasticizer into a flexible PVC formulation is usually not a simple one-to-one replacement. Differences in plasticizing efficiency, molecular weight and compatibility require a systematic evaluation against product hardness, processing window and service environment. Compatibility is often the first indicator to confirm. Insufficient compatibility makes a finished product more prone to oil exudation at low temperatures or after long-term use, affecting appearance and hand feel. A small-scale compatibility and exudation test is therefore recommended at the evaluation stage. The second dimension is processing temperature adaptability. Different plasticizers show different volatility loss and thermal stability, so processing temperature and the stabilization system may need a slight adjustment after replacement to avoid appearance variation during processing. Overall, replacement evaluation is closer to a process of gradual convergence: confirm compatibility first, then processing performance, and finally finalize the formulation against cost and compliance requirements.
